Impromptu speech - a real test!

I just came back from a networking lunch with one of major chamber of commerce in Taiwan. It was a closed door session, where they have invited trade representatives from Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.

After the simple lunch (jadi "vegetarian" lah hamba... hehehe...), the Director General has invited us to give an impromptu briefing on latest developments in Malaysia, as well as bilateral economic relations with Taiwan, with potential areas of cooperation. We were never informed by the organisation, so we don't prepare any briefing materials. (Datang tangan kosong, kepala kosong dan perut kosong... hahahaha). But I took the initiative to do some homework before attending the function.

Perghh!!! All three of us looked at each other (sapa nak start dulu), even though I am the youngest trade rep among those three... I took the challenge and "belasah cerita/goreng apa yang patut..." hehehehe... Alhamdulillah some of my readings last few days gave me the strength to shoot several interesting pointers to them. I briefed on latest economic situation in Malaysia, stimulus package, bilateral trade situation (sebulan gua buat report ni... dah hafal siut... hehehe), potential areas of cooperation (only play two cards - renewable energy and biotech sectors).

The Indonesian rep (bertaraf "bapak") just took less than 10 minutes on bilateral economy & trade between Indonesia & Taiwan, while the Singaporean rep (looks sharp and convincing), but he also keep many cards on his chest. Nothing much from him. Singapore was severy affected by global economic downturn, therefore the government's effort is more towards sustaining the growth and maintain Singaporeans in the current jobs/new job creation.

Lessons Learned

As one of the official reps for Malaysia, I should keep abreast and maintain "info/fact cards" that I should keep in my chest and use them when needed. The information must be publicly available info (meaning if you search for it at the Net, or browse at hardcopies, it is available), not restricted or classified information.

It's like playing poker with many players. Use the appropriate cards when situation allows you to use it, or when opportunity to strike comes. Then you can gave a powerful impact to your audience. I should learned how to manipulate normal information (trade statistics for example), and portray or put in different perspective, coup that other people will be impressed and attracted.

In this competitive world, information is one of the key weapons. Those who have access or acquire lots of information will be in advantage. Those who can use and manipulate the information can easily convince/influence other people.

Footnote: I should go and buy the book on Obama's techniques and methods of speech delivery & the content of his speeches. How he inspired many Americans to vote for him, to be the first African American President for the USA. "Say It Like Obama - Shel Leanne".
