Taiwan Shuts Exchange, Schools as Typhoon Bears Down on Island
By Janet Ong
July 27 (Bloomberg) -- Taiwan will close schools and businesses in Taiwan and elsewhere in the northern and central provinces as Typhoon Fung-Wong bears down on the island. The Taiwan Stock Exchange will also shut down in the capital.
Fung-Wong, Chinese for Phoenix, was about 220 kilometers (136 miles) southeast of the city of Hualien, the Central Weather Bureau said on its Web site, and was moving northwest at 14 kilometers an hour at 7 p.m. in Taiwan.
The typhoon, with wind gusts of 173 kilometers (107 miles) per hour, is likely hit the island early tomorrow, the weather agency said. It was packing sustained winds as high as 137 kph.
The storm will be the second to hit Taiwan this month after Typhoon Kalmaegi lashed the island on July 18, killing at least 18 people and causing millions of dollars of agricultural damage.
Taipei city and county, Hsinchu city and county, Taoyuan county and Keelung city in the north will shut for the day, the government's Central Personnel Administration said on its Web site. The eastern counties of Hualian, Ilan, Taitung and Penghu as well as some counties in central Taiwan will also shut for the day.
The Northwest Pacific region, including Taiwan, eastern China, Japan and Vietnam, may be hit by more typhoons this year because relatively high ocean temperatures are promoting the development of storms, the bureau said in a June 27 report.
As many as 29 typhoons and tropical storms may strike the region this year compared with 24 last year, it said.
